Spell Check The Kids!

I don’t know about the rest of you but I am sick to death of the amount of regional and national english spelling errors that crop up on UK and US websites! People have become so accustomed to relying on spell check software, that they don’t trust themeselves to write something without first typing it into a spell checker!
Take the phrase; armed forces insurance. I bet you a million pounds (notice I spelt the word instead of using numbers and symbols) that there are only five out of every ten people who can spell that phrase properly without the aid of a spell check. Do you know what I believe the problem to be? It goes right back to being a child and learning how to read at school. Kid’s just don’t know how to do it anymore. More worryingly, kid’s don’t know how to enjoy reading anymore. I was taught to read when I was three years old (note again how I refuse to use numbers) by my parents. That’s right, my parents. Today society blames schools and the general standard of teaching. The thing society forgets however is that learning begins from the moment a child is born. Therefore the child’s environment at home is essential in learning how to not use a spell checker.
Come on people! Don’t be afraid to pick up a book (not a Kindle or some other fancy gadget) and share it with your kid…if you have one of course. If you don’t have a kid, then go out to a school and ban every mobile device, fancy computer and gadget you find in the classroom and give them all a book to read. Don’t let them out until they’ve read a chapter. Reading is far more effective then any teaching method in getting people to read and write properly. Spelling will improve dramatically across the world if we can get kid’s back into reading. The most important thing is to catch them at a young age. Get them young and they will run…towards great spelling.
By the way if anyone wants to pick apart my grammar or spelling on this post feel free. It’s important I continue to learn too.
